The gap
Not one business appears on both lists. 3 of the businesses AI recommends do not show up in Google’s local results for this search at all, and 5 businesses Google ranks are never named by the assistants.
Ranking well on Google and being recommended by AI are two different races. A business can own the map pack in Austin, TX and still be invisible when a customer asks an assistant the same question — and the reverse happens just as often.
The two systems read different things. Google’s local pack leans on proximity, Google Business Profile completeness and review volume. An assistant is summarising what the web says about a business — directory profiles, roundups, forum threads and the business’s own pages — and names whoever its trusted sources describe most clearly. Different inputs, different lists.
Method and limitations
- What was measured: the query “best coffee shop in Austin, TX” was put to leading AI assistants, and the businesses named in their answers were recorded in order. Google’s local results for the identical query were captured at the same time.
- When: 5 July 2026. This is a snapshot, not a live ranking.
- Assistants disagree with each other, and answers vary between runs. Treat the list as representative of what a customer is likely to be told, not as a fixed ranking.
- This is not a quality judgement. Being named by AI reflects how clearly and favourably the web describes a business, not how good its work is. Excellent businesses go unnamed all the time — that is the whole point.
- Our own methodology. We sell AI visibility services, so we have an interest here. The method above is stated so you can run it yourself and check.
